Maria

Administrative Director

Maria Corso is a wife, mom of 3, high school Italian teacher and a wearer of many other hats. Maria is of Italian & Slovak descent. Growing up she spent a lot of time with her Italian immigrant grandparents. It was during this time spent with them and her family that she was exposed to the Italian language, culture & traditions. Maria has a lot of respect and love for the history, culture, language & traditions of not only Italian culture but all other cultures as well.

Maria has loved music and dance since she was a little girl. From taking ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop classes to singing in chorus, women’s choir or a few talent shows; music & dance was something that lived in Maria’s heart and made her happy. Her husband of 11 years, Chris “Amargue” introduced her to the Latin Music of Salsa, Bachata & Reggaeton and she immediately fell in love with it and for the past 3 or 4 years is her primary music choice to listens to.

A little over 7 years ago she started her Latin Dance journey with Chris. Starting with salsa on 2, then switching to modern Bachata; where our love for Bachata began to really grow. They did a few team performances, attended many Island Touch events and were on the dance team “Brooklyn Touch” as well. However, something was missing, the Bachata that they really loved was traditional, but it was very hard to find.

After returning from a trip to the Dominican Republic, Maria was determined to continue her studies of traditional Bachata. It was at that time that she came across Ace Fusion’s post advertising a traditional Bachata series. Maria looked up to Ace, was a big fan and knew that this was an amazing opportunity.

She was there from day 1, (before it was even called Amargue Flow), and has attended each and every series, class and teacher training that Ace has given. She has grown immensely as a dancer and human being. She is rooted and grounded in the culture and history of Bachata, she has so much more feeling and connection to the music than ever before and is so so proud to be a part of the beautiful dance family of Amargue Flow. Training with Ace, is an opportunity one should not miss. They are unlike every other instructor out there and their energy and heart are as well.

Maria is involved in a lot of the “behind the scenes” admin work of Amargue Flow. From sending emails, organizing spreadsheets & curricula for classes and series, to being the friendly face who checks students in when they arrive for class. She is a planner & organizer, Amargue Flow’s chef & baker. She creates flyers for Amargue Flow’s events & classes and is the creator of this website. She is happy and proud to be an important part of the Amargue Flow Family & Leadership team.

Chris “DJ Chris Amargue”

Long Island

Christian Corso also known as Chris Amargue born and raised in Long Island, NY. As a kid loving Micheal Jackson and performing “shows” for my family. Getting older fell in love with skateboarding which exposed me to all types of music from underground rock to hip hop. Loving the hip hop sound and culture I eventually became a hip hop Dj for a local bar in Brooklyn, NY.

In the early 2000s hearing Aventuras “Obsession” sparked my love and passion for bachata. From then on, learning about bachata music, history and culture has been a passion. Studying in the Dominican Republic as well as various workshops/festivals throughout the country. Dance is therapy, a way for people to escape the everyday stresses. Being a part of a community, having a place in this world is something everyone needs. I am here to provide and build that space for everyone, delivering a fun and memorable experience for all. I am more than a dance instructor, I am here to inspire, spread love, share knowledge and bring bachata to anyone wanting to learn.

Heidi

instructor

Heidi Vique was born in Barcelona, Spain and spent her childhood listening to bachata since her mother, Lorena Abril was a big fan of traditional bachata especially Aventura. Being of Ecuadorian descent, she moved to Ecuador with her parents and two sisters when she was 8 years old. Once Heidi arrived to Ecuador, she was able to gradually appreciate the Latin culture, the town's festivities, the dance parades and the family traditions always with background music, food, smiling people and her family dancing.

That's when Lorena, seeing that her daughter was interested in dancing and taking advantage of the summer vacations, began to enroll her in dance courses. There, she began to learn he basic steps of bachata, merengue, salsa and urban. When she was 11 years old, Heidi enrolled in Belly Dance classes and without knowing exactly what type of dance it was, in her first class she was so enchanted that she spent 5 consecutive years attending Belly Dance classes. Since Heidi lived in a very small town in Ecuador called Cumandá, she did not have the opportunity or the resources to attend a dance academy to train as a dancer, however she loved participating in any dance activity there was in her school, town or at her family parties. That was the only way of satisfying her immense desire to dance.

At the age of 16, Heidi and her family, looking for a new opportunity, traveled to the US and settled in Budd Lake NJ. It was a small own totally far from the Latino community and culture where Heidi finished school, learned English and began to work to help with the expenses of her home. There was never a lack of music since Heidi's father, Edwin Vique and her middle sister Alis Vique were passionate about singing. This influenced the love of the musical art to always remain. Heidi never gave up on dancing and was looking for a way to train as a dancer and found a place where she began to learn about Cali salsa with the instructor Jorge Ariscos. There she stayed only for a few months, due to the distance, the cost and the time it took for her to travel there.

Heidi continued listening to bachata at home practiced her basic steps. She danced with great passion until one day by chance she saw a viral video of “Ace Fusión” dancing. That was when Heidi fell in love with traditional bachata and began to try to learn by watching videos and tutorials on the internet. At 20 years old, Heidi's family decided to return back to Ecuador and she decided to move to Queens, NYC to follow her dream as a dancer where she began taking classes in January 2022 at Empire Dance Studio with instructors such as Katlyn Rodríguez, Guillermo Reyes and Margie Montes.

In November 2022 she began taking classes with Amargue flow where she dedicated herself to training in bachata with her mentor and big idol Andrea Arenasvazquez aka “AceFusion”. Also, Heidi is a certified Amargue flow instructor. She has had the opportunity to be part of the leadership team at Amargue flow, which has allowed her to assist in classes and host practice sessions alongside Angely Francisco, Team Captain of Amargue flow. Apart from training at AF, Heidi trains with Desiree Godsell’s AnD Formation bachata Team.

Heidi considers herself a passionate bachata dancer and educator who admires, respects and loves the roots and culture of traditional bachata. Her objective is to raise awareness and encourage this dance not to lose its essence. Her mission is to educate either in person or on the internet platform to countries where perhaps people who are passionate about dancing but do not have the reach or resources to attend a formal academy.

She became a b-girl, training and performing with the renowned Floorlords Crew. It was also in Boston that Carlendra was first introduced to salsa and bachata.

Carlendra continued to grow in breakin’, house, hip hop, and vogue in Philadelphia and Baltimore, and upon completing law school in 2009, she was invited to join Urban Artistry, Inc. (UA), an internationally recognized dance organization based in the Washington, DC metro area, that is dedicated to the performance and preservation of art forms inspired by the urban experience. Carlendra remains an active UA member, performing, battling, judging, and teaching. In 2011, Carlendra joined the Orfeia Women’s Vocal Ensemble, singing traditional Bulgarian folk songs locally and internationally, where she performed on The Slavi Show and for Bulgarian National Radio.

Fast-forward to 2019, when Carlendra was now a mother, and she attended an event in St. Croix that reignited her interest in bachata, which quickly morphed into a passion. Carlendra immersed herself in bachata training. She eventually visited to the Dominican Republic several times to learn and experience bachata from its source. She has primarily been under the guidance of Andrea Arenasvazquez, aka “AceFusion,” Elizabeth Bido, Rodolfo Montaño Castro, Laura Giró Coll, Cat Gloria, Frank Mendez, and Jessica Taylor.

In 2022, Carlendra joined the Amargue Flow Dance Academy, which has been instrumental in her bachata journey, and in 2023, Carlendra successfully completed the Amargue Flow Instructor Training program. Largely influenced by her experience in UA, she considers herself to be a tradition bearer in dance, which motivates her to honor and maintain bachata’s roots and authenticity. She decorates her bachata with elements of breakin’, house, hip hop, and vogue while remaining rooted in bachata fundamentals. Carlendra looks forward to creating a safe and welcoming environment for students to learn bachata building blocks while developing their own personal style and expression. She is honored to be a part of the Amargue Flow family and is excited to grow with the community!
